After the game, a reporter asked Steenbergen how it felt to win the WHL title on home ice.
"It was unbelievable," Steenbergen said. "I had the shivers. I kind of blacked out for a bit ... It's pretty crazy. Our team, all year, we were built for this, and it's pretty exciting to move on to Regina (for the Memorial Cup) next weekend."
Everett out-shot Swift Current, 31-25, including 11-6 in the third period.
"We wanted to get the first goal, which we did, and then we wanted to shut them down the rest of the way," Steenbergen said. "I think we did a pretty good job of keeping them to the outside."
Steenbergen, whom Arizona drafted 128th overall in 2017, produced 28 points (12 goals and 16 assists) in 27 WHL playoff games, which ranks third on the team. In 56 regular-season games, Steenbergen notched 102 points (47 goals, 55 assists) in 56 games. He's hoping to punctuate a memorable season by winning the Memorial Cup championship. In January, he scored the decisive goal for Team Canada vs. Team Sweden in the gold-medal game at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Swift Current earned 103 points during the regular season, second only to Moose Jaw (109). Team chemistry, Steenbergen said, played a key role in that success.
"Everyone gets along super well," Steenbergen said. "Everyone has so much fun every day coming to the rink, and I think that's the biggest part to winning a championship."
