Coyotes goalie Mike Smith took batting practice with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday before the team’s Major League Baseball game against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.
Smith grew up in Kingston, Ontario, and played baseball as a youngster there. He said is a long-time Blue Jays fan and a somewhat new Diamondbacks fan.
Once in the batting cage, Smith cracked a few long drives to the outfield off Diamondbacks batting practice pitcher Glenn Sherlock. He also bunted.
“He was throwing really hard, a lot harder than I was used to, but it was a lot of fun,” Smith told FOX Sports Arizona. “It was a blast just being around the guys, and close to my hometown, and getting to see what they go through on a day-to-day basis. They play a ton of games and the mentality is so much different than hockey’s.”
Smith attended the game with his wife and three sons and they mingled with players on the field before the matinee began.
Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt offered Smith some short but sweet advice before he entered the batting cage.
“Don’t get hurt,” Goldschmidt said.NOTE:
