Smith Suffers Lower-Body Injury, Leaves Game

by | Dave Vest / Arizona Coyotes

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith left the game at the New York Rangers on Monday night because of a lower-body injury.

With 7:34 left in the third period and the Coyotes leading, 3-2, Smith injured his right leg and was in obvious pain after Rangers forward Derick Brassard fell on top of him following a scramble in front of the net.

Smith was helped off the ice and did not return.

UPDATE: On Tuesday morning in Pittsburgh, Head Coach Dave Tippett said Smith was "day-to-day" and that goalie Mark Visentin would be recalled from the team's affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Smith has been a stalwart in Phoenix's quest to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Entering the game Monday, Smith had a 27-21-10 record with a 2.65 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 61 games.

Thomas Greiss replaced Smith in net and gave up two goals in a 4-3 overtime loss. Tippett said Greiss would play Tuesday's game at Pittsburgh as had been scheduled before Smith's injury. It will be his first start since Feb. 28 at Colorado.
