SCOUT PROFILE: STEVE LYONS

by Staff Writer / Arizona Coyotes

Name: Steve Lyons
Years with the Coyotes: 6th Year
Years as a scout: 23rd Year
Areas scouted: I oversee all the scouts and view prospects from all over. I am not assigned to one region like most of our scouts.
How many games do you see a year? I saw at least 250 games this year. I was traveling all over to see most of the players elgible. If we are drafting a player, I want to see him if possible.
What is your background in hockey? I was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 1980. I played in the Atlantic Coast League and the IHL before I finished playing.
What is your background in scouting? I have been scouting in the NHL for 23 years. I was with the Chicago Blackhawks for my  first 12 seasons in the NHL. I was their U.S. Scout for 10 years. I then joined the Colorado Avalanche and was with them during the next five seasons. I made the move to Phoenix after that and was a scout here before I was promoted into this role.
What is your role with the Coyotes? I help (Director of Amateur Scouting) Keith Gretzky coordinate the staff. I kind of oversee the guys with where they are going and what they are doing. Keith and I try to see as many guys as possible, but that isn't always possible with how many guys there are in the draft. That's where our scouts come in. We won't take anyone who we haven't seen.
