TAMPA BAY -- Don't be fooled by the final score. The Coyotes played one of their better games of the season on Monday night vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that's already secured the NHL's Presidents' Trophy with more than two weeks left in the season.

"That's probably the most proud I've been of the team all year," Head Coach Rick Tocchet said after a 4-1 loss at Amalie Arena. "I thought we were very good tonight ... You're playing a number one (team) and I thought we handled ourselves really well. Guys played hard. They stuck to the system."

Tocchet: 'We Were Very Good Tonight'

Clayton Keller scored his 14th goal of the season and Darcy Kuemper made 20 saves for the Coyotes, who will play three more games on this road trip before returning to Arizona on Sunday.
Keller's goal, which he scored from the slot at 5:03 of the first period, gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. Richard Panik and Christian Dvorak set it up nicely with a steal and a nifty pass, respectively.

The advantage was short-lived. Less than two minutes later, Steven Stamkos redirected a shot by Ryan McDonagh past Kuemper to tie the score 1-1. The goal was his 384th, the most by any member of the Lightning in franchise history. Stamkos, whom Tampa Bay drafted first overall in 2008, received a standing ovation from the crowd when his feat was acknowledged on the video board during a break in the game.
After neither team scored in the middle frame, Victor Hedman put Tampa Bay ahead 2-1 when he crashed the net and flipped a loose puck past Kuemper 44 seconds into the third period. The Coyotes outshot the Lightning, 11-6, in the final 20 minutes but couldn't score on Andrei Vasilevskiy, who made 28 saves overall.
Stamkos created some extra drama when he was called for delay of game with just 1:39 left. Wanting to skate six-on-four, the Coyotes pulled Kuemper. The maneuver didn't succeed, and Tampa Bay added two empty-net goals within the last minute to create a final score that didn't represent the close game that was played.
"We feel like we played a really good game," Alex Goligoski said. "It's the kind of game we wanted to play. It was right there for us. It's a little frustrating not getting the two points, but that's the way it goes."

Goligoski: 'We Played A Really Good Game'

Oliver Ekman-Larsson agreed.
"We had some good looks," Ekman-Larsson said. "They didn't really have much in the first or the second period. You can't forget that we're playing against one of the best teams in the League, and we matched them really, really good tonight. So, I'm proud of the guys."
• Keller's goal was his fourth vs. Tampa Bay. He's scored more goals vs. the Lightning than any other NHL team.
"It's tough," Keller said. 'We played a hard game. We had our chances. It sucks to see that one slip away, but it's on to the next game now. This is a big road trip for us."
