QMJHL Player of the Month awards 2006-02-02

BOUCHERVILLE, Thursday, February 2, 2006 (QMJHL) - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the winners of the offensive, defensive and rookie player of the month awards for January following a list of candidates submitted by the eighteen QMJHL teams. A League mandated committee is responsible for picking the monthly winners.

The offensive player of the month is Olivier Latendresse of the Val-d'Or Foreurs. The forward had quite a showing in January, tallying eight goals, all at even strength, as well as nineteen assists, good for twenty-seven points in only twelve games. Furthermore, he was a very healthy +15 (plus/minus). During the last four weeks, he registered two five point contests at home, the first coming against the Fog Devils and the second coming last Tuesday versus the Huskies. He presently sits fifth in the League in scoring with 88 points.

Other players considered for the award were David Desharnais of Chicoutimi, Alexander Radulov of Quebec and Philippe Dupuis of Moncton.

The defensive player of the month award winner is Josh Tordjman of the Moncton Wildcats. The goaltender went unbeaten in January, winning eight games, including one shutout. His goals-against-average was an impressive 1.26 and his save percentage was tops among netminders at .951. His performances have enabled the Wildcats to go on a team-record thirteen game winning streak while taking over the top spot in the QMJHL overall standings. His 23 wins this year trail only Jean-Philippe Levasseur (29) and Gabriel Bouthillette (24).

Defensemen Keith Yandle of Moncton, Kristopher Letang of Val-d'Or and Patrick Coulombe of Chicoutimi were also considered.

Among rookies, goalkeeper Bobby Nadeau of the Val-d'Or Foreurs takes home the hardware. The 17 year-old backstop offered a solid contribution in net, winning six of his eight games, including two against the solid Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Furthermore, he maintained a 2.73 goals-against-average and a .924 save percentage.

The finalists for the rookie honour were forwards Angelo Esposito of Quebec and Claude Giroux of Gatineau as well as defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy of Rouyn-Noranda.
