I recently had a chance to talk with the newest member of the Coyotes radio broadcast team, Luke Lapinski, to get his thoughts about the upcoming season and to learn a little more about the new pre- and post-game radio host.
RB: Where did you get your degree?
LL: I got my degree from Arizona State University with concentrations in Broadcast Journalism and Psychology.
RB: How did you get into radio?
LL: I got into radio when I was at ASU. I was doing play-by-play for football, basketball, and even some club hockey games at the Blaze, the ASU student-run station. I really loved calling hockey when I got the opportunity to. Once I graduated, I wanted to give radio a shot and ended up getting a job at XTRA 910.
RB: Where does your passion for hockey originate?
LL: I was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Seattle. My family is from back east and loved hockey growing up. Their enthusiasm made me get into the game and I haven’t stopped playing since I was introduced.
RB: Was hockey the only sport you played growing up?
LL: No. I played all sports growing up, but I ended up sticking with hockey the longest because I loved it the most.
RB: What are you looking forward to the most this season?
LL: The excitement of the fans and dealing with them every game. The fans here have a lot of excitement and passion for the game. I look forward to speaking with the fans and players after games and talking hockey on the radio. I want to be close with the fans as well as establish excitement.
RB: What is something that fans might not know about you?
LL: Most people say that I am really laid back, but many don’t know how big of a music freak I am. I really like all kinds of music, except country, but usually prefer rock. It all depends on what kind of a mood I am in at the time.
RB: You have lived here since 2000. How do you feel about the Coyotes fans?
LL: Coyotes fans are really passionate and energetic about their team. Hockey fans as a whole are very different. Most fans don’t just care about their team, but rather hockey as a whole and Coyotes fans are no different.
RB: What do you think of the Coyotes team this upcoming season?
LL: I like the energy level that this team will bring this season. Last year, this team had many young players. This year, those players have more experience, and with contributions from other young players, this team will have a great shot at making the playoffs. This team also has great goaltending with Ilya Bryzgalov between the pipes. It will be interesting to see how well they do with great goaltending all season. The only question with this team is can they score enough goals.
