Hanzal & Michalek Selected to Represent Czech Republic at 2014 Winter Olympics

GLENDALE, ARIZONA – Phoenix Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal and defenseman Zbynek Michalek will each represent the Czech Republic at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Hanzal will be making his Olympics debut for the Czech Republic. He represented his country at the IIHF World Championship in 2008 and 2013 and at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2006 and 2007. In 2005, Hanzal posted 4-3-7 and a plus-7 rating in seven games at the IIHF U-18 World Championship in the Czech Republic and was named to the tournament All-Star team.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound centerman has collected 11-17-28 and 49 PIM in 38 games this season. He also ranks third on the team in scoring, tied for second in goals and first with 128 hits. Hanzal played in his 400th career NHL game vs. Detroit on Oct. 19.

Now in his third season as an alternate captain, the 26-year-old native of Pisek, Czech Republic has played in 429 career NHL games, totaling 76-134-210 and 362 PIM. Hanzal was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the first round (17th overall) in the 2005 Entry Draft.


Michalek will be participating in the Olympics for the second time. He played in five games for the Czech Republic at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. The 31-year-old defenseman also represented his country at the IIHF World Championship in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2013. Michalek helped lead the Czech Republic to a silver medal in 2006 and a bronze medal in 2011.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Michalek has posted 0-4-4 and 10 PIM in 24 games this season. He leads the team with 72 blocked shots. The Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic native is now in his seventh season with the Coyotes and 10th in the NHL. He has registered 34-119-153 with 270 PIM in 608 career NHL games.

Michalek was acquired by Phoenix from Pittsburgh in exchange for Harrison Ruopp, Marc Cheverie and a third-round selection in the 2012 Entry Draft on June 22, 2012.
