GLENDALE – Nice guys CAN finish first.
Coyotes captain Shane Doan has been voted the Valley’s Most Popular Sports Figure by fans in an online poll conducted by azcentral.com.
Doan, who has spent his entire NHL career playing for the Coyotes franchise, won the vote in landslide fashion; nearly 70 percent of the 6,787 votes cast on the web site were for Doan.
"Obviously it's kind of surprising," Doan said with a laugh after being told he had won and had won so convincingly. "I'm a Valley sports fan, too, and a pretty big fan of some of those other guys on the list so I would have picked them ahead of me."
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald finished a distant second in the voting with 14.5 percent of the votes. The other nominees were Bruce Arians, Paul Goldschmidt, Carson Palmer, Patrick Peterson, Todd Graham, Mike Bercovici, Tyrann Mathieu and Calais Campbell.
The contest was for active sports figures only.
Doan has played 1,394 NHL games since the franchise drafted him seventh overall in 1995. He is preparing for the 2015-16 season as the longest tenured captain in the NHL.
Beyond the stats, Doan is recognized in Arizona and across North America as being one of the nicest pro athletes a fan can meet. He gladly signs autographs and poses for pictures upon request, and he genuinely cares about strangers as if they are friends.
"I'd like to thank all the fans who voted for me," Doan said. "It's a nice honor and you appreciate it more knowing it's coming from the fans. It seems a lot of hockey fans voted. That's encouraging to see here in the Valley."
