GLENDALE – Coyotes captain Shane Doan notched the 500th assist of his NHL career on Tuesday night during his team’s 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Jobing.com Arena.
Doan set up Oliver Ekman-Larsson's power-play goal in the second period to join Thomas Steen (553) and Dale Hawerchuk (550) as the only players in franchise history with 500 or more assists.
"It means you've played for a long time," Doan said with a smile. "Especially in my case, when you're not that good but you've been around for a while. Those other guys didn't play here as long, and they are still way ahead of me."
The crowd inside the arena gave Doan a roaring ovation when his milestone was announced during a break in the action.
Doan’s assist was his 75th career point against the Kings, the most he has against any team.
Wayne Gretzky holds the NHL record for assists. He had 1,963.
