GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan
has been named to the Western Conference roster for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game, which will be played Sunday, Jan. 25 at Bell Centre in Montreal.
Doan, 32, will be making his second career NHL All-Star appearance. He also represented the Coyotes in the 2004 All-Star Game in St. Paul, Minn. and scored a goal.
Doan currently leads the Coyotes in scoring with 18-20-38 in 41 games. The franchise’s all-time leader in game-winning goals (42), Doan also ranks 3rd on the Jets/Coyotes all-time list in games played (924), 4th in points (588) and assists (343), and 5th in goals (245). With 18 goals this season, Doan needs just two more goals to join Dale Hawerchuk and Keith Tkachuk as the only players in franchise history to record nine consecutive 20-goal seasons.
Last season, Doan led the Coyotes in scoring for the fourth straight season with 28-50-78 while establishing new career-highs in points (78) and assists (50). His 78 points ranked T-20th in the NHL while he also ranked T-2nd in the league with nine shorthanded points on the year (2-7-9).
Doan was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round (7th overall) of the 1995 Entry Draft and has spent his entire career with the Jets/Coyotes organization. Now in his 13th season with the club and fifth as team captain, Doan is one of just three players to have appeared in over 900 games with the team.
A native of Halkirk, Alberta, Doan has represented Canada in international competition seven times, including the 2006 Winter Olympics and five World Championship tournaments (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008). Doan served as Canada’s team captain at the 2007 and ’08 World Championships.
The 2009 NHL All-Star Weekend in Montreal will celebrate the Montreal Canadiens’ Centennial season with the Honda/NHL SuperSkills event on Saturday, Jan. 24, and the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 25.
