by Dave Vest / Arizona Coyotes
GLENDALE – The Coyotes will play the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which begin later this week.

Phoenix (50-25-7) is the No. 4 seed. Detroit (44-24-14) secured the No. 5 seed by beating Chicago, 3-2 in overtime, on Sunday.

The Coyotes and Red Wings played four games this season.
The results:

Dec. 14, 2009 at Detroit: DET 3, PHX 2
Jan. 26, 2010 at Detroit: PHX 5, DET 4 (OT)

Oct. 22, 2009 at Phoenix: PHX 3, DET 2 (OT)
Jan. 2, 2010 at Phoenix: DET 4, PHX 1

Coyotes captain Shane Doan is excited for the playoffs to start. It will be Phoenix’s first appearance in the NHL postseason since 2002.

“I think one of the things we look at as a group is we're definitely not happy with just making the playoffs,” Doan said last week. “We think we've got a team that's capable of being a very hard out.”

Phoenix's dramatic, come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Detroit on Jan. 26 at Joe Louis Arena triggered a six-game winning streak. Click here to read the recap and/or click here to watch the post-game video recap.
