COYOTES STAY AWAY FROM ICE FOR A DAY

by Dave Vest / Arizona Coyotes
GLENDALE – The Coyotes didn’t practice Wednesday, but they will on Thursday in preparation for Friday’s Game 5 of their playoff series vs. the Detroit Red Wings. The series is tied two games apiece.

On Wednesday, Head Coach Dave Tippett said the players needed a day away from hockey.

“Any time you can rest your mind and rest your body after a tough game like last night, you do it,” Tippett said. “It’s very rare to get a couple days off like this, so we’ll get rest today and get back to work tomorrow and get ready for Game 5.”

Captain Shane Doan spent part off his day off getting treatment for his undisclosed injury. Tippett said he’s expecting an update on Doan’s condition late Wednesday. Tippett is hopeful Doan can return for Game 5 on Friday but noted the team will go on without him again if needed.

"Do we miss Doaner? Sure, he's been an impact player in the series," Tippett said. "You certainly miss his physical ability out there as well as the skill element that he can bring to us. But we showed (in Game 3) that we're going to be able to get through that... Hopefully he's progressing and we've got a chance (to get him back) on Friday."

What was a best-of-seven series is now a best-of-three series with two of those games set to be played at Jobing.com Arena where Phoenix has won 30 of 43 games this season, including playoffs.

Asked for his day-after analysis of his team’s 3-0 loss in Game 4 on Tuesday, Tippett said:

“I thought our execution with the puck, especially in the offensive zone but all over the ice, wasn’t near as good as it could have been. We need some better execution… we have to create better scoring opportunities. I realize that’s hard to do sometimes, but we have people who are very capable of doing that so that’s an area we have to clean up.”
