Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced that the Coyotes have signed left wing David Spina to a one-year American Hockey League (AHL) contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Spina, 24, was raised and resides in Mesa, Arizona.   He played hockey as a youngster in the Phoenix Junior Roadrunners program.  Spina later attended Red Mountain High School in Mesa for a year before playing junior hockey for the Texas Tornadoes of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and spending a season with the U.S. National Development Program. 
Spina registered 15-20-35 and 80 penalty minutes (PIM) in 73 games with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season. The 5-foot-10, 185 pound forward also collected 4-2-6 and 4 PIM in 6 games with the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL.  Spina also recorded 11-13-24 and 36 PIM in 54 games with Springfield and scored 7 goals in 11 games with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL in his first full professional season of 2005-06.
Spina made his professional debut with the Utah Grizzlies, then the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate, near the end of the 2004-05 campaign.  He played 9 games for Utah following the completion of his senior season at Boston College.
In four seasons at Boston College, Spina tallied 49-54-103 in 138 games.  He ranked 3rd on the team in scoring as a senior in 2004-05 with 13-15-28 in 40 games.  Spina was named to the 2001-02 Hockey East All-Rookie Team as he collected 13-13-26 in 36 games as a freshman.
Prior to college, Spina posted 12-26-38 with the U.S. National Under-18 Team in 2000-01.  He played for Team USA in the 2001 IIHF World Under-18 Championships in Finland.  Spina collected 2-5-7 in 6 games in the tournament and was named one of Team USA’s top three players.
The Arizonan posted 17-34-51 in 61 NAHL games for the Texas Tornadoes in 1999-2000 and was named the team’s Rookie of the Year.
Spina participated at the Coyotes’ Rookie Summer Conditioning Camp in Peoria in July and will attend the Coyotes’ 2007 Training Camp which begins Thursday.  The camp’s first on-ice workouts will begin Friday at 9:00 am at Arena.
