The Phoenix Coyotes selected seven players on the second day of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Six forwards and one defenseman were chosen on Saturday, joining first-round pick
defenseman Connor Murphy
, rounding out the 2011 Phoenix Coyotes draft class. Center Alexander Ruuttu
was selected with the 51st overall pick, left wing Lucas Lessio
with the 56th overall pick in the second round. Defenseman Harrison Ruopp
was the Coyotes’ third-round selection (84th overall). Phoenix then selected a forward in each of the remaining four rounds; left wing Kale Kessy
-114th overall (fourth round), left wing Darian Dziurzynski
-141st overall (fifth round), right wing Andrew Fritsch
-155th overall (sixth round) and left wing Zac Larraza
-196th overall (seventh round).
The 6-foot-1, 185 pound Ruuttu recorded 18-13-31 and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) in 41 games with Jokerit Jr. of the Finnish Junior League in 2010-11. His father, Christian, was drafted 134th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1983 and played nine seasons in the NHL with the Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks. He is now the head european scout with the Phoenix Coyotes.
The 6-foot-1, 201 pound Lessio recorded 27-27-54 and 66 PIM in 66 games with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last season. In 2010-11, Lessio finished second on Oshawa in rookie scoring with 27 goals and 54 points in 66 games. The Maple, Ont. native represented Canada at the 2010 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka tournament and won silver with Team Ontario at the 2010 Under-17 World Challenge.
The 6-foot-2, 198 pound Ruopp collected nine assists and 98 PIM in 54 games with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2010-11. The 18-year old native of Zehner, Sask. has appeared in 87 games with Prince Albert over the past two seasons, collecting 136 PIM.
The 6-foot-2, 184 pound Kessy registered 10-14-24 and 129 PIM in 65 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season. The 18-year old native of Shaunavon, Sask. recorded 3-3-6 and 37 PIM in the 2010-11 WHL playoffs.
The 6-foot, 200 pound Dziurzynski recorded 35-22-57 and 125 PIM in 72 games with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season. The 20-year old native of Lloydminster, Alberta collected 3-3-6 and 18 PIM in the 2010-11 WHL playoffs.
The 6-foot, 187 pound Fritsch recorded 28-35-63 and 18 PIM in 60 games with the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2010-11. The 18-year old native of Brantford, Ont. appeared in two games with the Niagara Ice Dogs in 2010-11, collecting a goal before being traded to Owen Sound. Fritsch registered 11-7-18 and 13 PIM with Niagara (OHL) in 2009-10.
The 6-foot-2, 194 pound Larraza registered 8-5-13 and 20 PIM in 49 games with the U.S. NTDP, which plays in the Unites States Hockey League (USHL). The 18-year old native of Scottsdale, Ariz. captured gold at the 2011 IIHF U-18 World Championship, tallying a short-handed goal while collecting 1-4-5 in six games.
The Coyotes also traded their 201st overall selection in the seventh round to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for center Marc-Antoine Pouliot. The 6-foot-2, 193 pound Pouliot appeared in three games with the Lightning in 2010-11. The 26-year old native of Quebec City, Quebec has recorded 21-32-53 and 74 PIM in 179 career NHL games with the Lightning and Edmonton Oilers.
