GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the team has selected left wing Mikkel Boedker
with the eighth overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario.
Boedker, 18, recorded 29-44-73 and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) in 69 games with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last season. His 73 points ranked 3rd among all OHL rookies. A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, Boedker also ranked T-2nd in the OHL in game-winning goals (9).
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Boedker helped lead Kitchener to the OHL championship and the Memorial Cup final during the 2007-08 campaign. Boedker, ranked No. 11 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, finished 2nd in OHL playoff scoring this season after recording 9-26-35 in 20 games. He also registered 2-4-6 in five Memorial Cup games.
Voted as the OHL’s Best Skater in the Western Conference in the annual Coaches Poll, Boedker also represented Team Denmark at the 2008 World Junior Championships and ranked 2nd on the team in scoring with 2-4-6 in 6 games. In 2006-07, Boedker played for Frolunda in the Swedish Junior League. He registered 19-30-49 and 14 PIM in 39 games while leading his team to the league championship.
NHL Central Scouting Report:
Mikkel, who he is 5-foot-11, plays low to the ice and as a result is a real solid player. This Team Denmark product is currently a versatile player for the Kitchener Rangers and should also be for his NHL team. Right now, he quarterbacks the power-play as a forward from the point for the Rangers and does an effective job.
