Coyotes Select Chychrun 16th Overall at 2016 NHL Entry Draft

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- The Arizona Coyotes selected defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the first round (16th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York on Friday.

The Coyotes acquired the Detroit Red Wings’ 2016 1st round draft choice (16th overall) and forward Pavel Datsyuk in exchange for the team’s 2016 1st round pick (20th overall), 2016 2nd round pick (53rd overall) and forward Joe Vitale.

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Chychrun registered 11-38-49 with 51 penalty minutes (PIM) in 62 games which led all team defensemen and was fourth among OHL blueliners. Chychrun totaled 27-55-82 in 104 career games with Sarnia.

The 18-year-old native of Boca Raton, Florida was an OHL First Team All-Rookie in 2014-15 and played in the CHL Top Prospects Game last year. He was also named to the OHL Second All-Star Team.

Chychrun played with Canada at the U-18 World Junior Championship and scored 1-3-4 in seven games.
