GLENDALE – The Coyotes honored captain Shane Doan before Thursday’s game at Gila River Arena for recently becoming the franchise leader for goals scored.
As part of a pre-game ceremony, the team presented Doan, his wife and four children with an original painting commemorating his feat. The painting was designed and painted by Toronto-based David Arrigo, an artist known for, among many things, designing and painting goalie masks; Mike Smith is one of his clients.
Arrigo said it took him about 45 hours to complete the 4-foot by 3-foot, water-based acrylic painting of Doan on a custom-made canvas. He noted that Doan’s seven-goal outburst from Dec. 22-31 expedited the process. Click here to view a photo gallery.
“I first started speaking to the Coyotes about the painting in early December and then Shane started scoring goals like crazy,” Arrigo said. “So it was a busy period between Christmas and New Year’s Day in the planning stages of creating the entire layout and the overall feel of the painting.”
Doan scored his record-setting 380th goal on New Year’s Eve. Arrigo began painting on New Year’s Day. He said he’s proud of how it turned out and he hopes Doan likes it.
There are four images of Doan in the painting, but Arrigo said he used between 15-20 photos as points of reference while painting.
“I wanted to make sure everything was precise without getting to a photo realistic feel because I wanted to have my style in it so when people see it they recognize it as my work,” Arrigo said. “I had such a great time with it. I have my style, and my style definitely shows in this painting, but in saying that I am mindful that I don’t want this painting hanging in Shane’s closet. I want it to be a piece that Shane is proud to show. ”
Arrigo has painted similar milestone paintings for other pro athletes including Sidney Crosby and NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon. His work can also be seen annually at the Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the NHL All-Star Game.
• In addition to the painting, the Coyotes also presented Doan with a check for $100,000 as the initial donation into the “Shane Doan Arizona Youth Hockey Fund.” The team started the fund on Doan’s behalf, and it will be exclusively used to raise money to support youth hockey in the state of Arizona. All funds raised will be distributed to youth hockey programs at the discretion of Shane and his board of directors.
• Alternate captains Martin Hanzal and Oliver Ekman-Larsson presented Doan with a watch as a gift from his teammates.
• As part of the evening, messages of congratulations were shown to Doan on the Jumbotron, including these:

“I don’t think there’s been more than two or three guys in this world that have had more class and exemplified true grit more than you Shane. To be with one team as long as you have not only shows the type of person you are, it shows what type of competitor you are. You deserve all the accolades.” – Jeremy Roenick
