The Coyotes rolled past the Anaheim Ducks in their second game of the Pacific Division Shootout with a solid 3-1 win on Saturday. With the exception of the Ducks only goal, Phoenix goalie Josh Tordjman and the squad's special teams unit led the way past the Anaheim.
After a quiet start to the first period, the Ducks opened up the scoring at 11:46 in the first frame on a Dirk Southern goal. The Ducks were pressuring down low when a Scott Fletcher shot was deflected off the leg of Coyotes defenseman Logan Stephenson. The puck trickled right in-front of Southern as he wristed it past Phoenix goalie Josh Tordjman to put Anaheim up 1-0.
"I wanted that one back," Tordjman said about the Ducks lone maker. "I had to forget it about really fast because these are some tough games."
Phoenix would go on to use the power play to pull even with Ducks with an Enver Lisin goal at 12:45. Olivier Latendresse was working the puck through the Anaheim zone on the far boards when he moved the puck over to defenseman Keith Yandle. At the top of the right circle, Yandle faked the shot and made a crisp backdoor pass to Lisin. Lisin tapped the puck in past Ducks goalie J.P Levasseur for his second goal of the tournament and put the teams even at 1-1.
"I got the puck at the point and I looked up quick and saw Enver back door," Yandle explained about setting up the game-tying goal. "Lisin made a great tip-in to get the goal."
The teams exchanged several power plays opportunities throughout the second period until the Coyotes cashed in on the man advantage for the second time at 12:29. Phoenix defenseman and team captain Matt Jones was setting up the power play from the left point when he sent a sharp pass across the slot to Olivier Latendresse in the right circle. In almost similar fashion to the Coyotes' first goal, Latendresse placed a sharp pass that met center Martin Hanzal lurking at the backdoor. In one fluid motion, Hanzal slammed the puck home for the goal, which put the Coyotes up 2-1.
"We just worked it up top," Jones recounted about setting up the Coyotes second goal. "Latendresse got the puck on net and Hanzal buried it for us."
The final frame played out in similar fashion as the second period.
The Coyotes put the game out of reach when Bill Thomas scored an even strength goal at 10:03. Yandle put a shot on goal from the right point but Levasseur made the initial save. Thomas lunged at the rebound at knocked it in for a 3-1 lead.
"I went towards the net and Yandle got the shot through," Thomas said about getting in tight for a rebound for his second goal of the tournament. "I just dove, got some pretty good wood on it and it got through."
The Coyotes would skate out the rest of the third with a comfortable lead, only having to kill two penalties in the final two minutes.
"The defense did a great job in front of the net tonight," Tordjman recalled. "In such a short span of time, our team did a good job of playing defense and gave me the chance to see the puck a lot tonight."
With his team on a roll, Head Coach Pat Conacher was impressed with his squad.
"We played very well tonight," Conacher summarized about the teams' overall effort. "We did a good job being physical, we were moving the puck and putting the puck in the right places."
