While most had been through the doors before, there were plenty of new faces inside the rink, including free-agent acquisitions Ray Whitney
and Eric Belanger.
“You are always nervous when you come in to a new team but I know a couple of the guys here (Whitney, Shane Hnidy, Andrew Ebbett) and it’s a small business and we all go through it.” Belanger said. “…The guys were welcoming when I came in. Everything is new here for me so I just tried to follow the guys around. It’s nice to get this first day out of the way, and we’re all excited to get on the ice.”
The first day began with a 20-minute briefing led by General Manager Don Maloney and Head Coach Dave Tippett. After that, the players scattered to undergo various physical exams and testing, to file paperwork and to perform “Media Day” tasks, such as posing for headshots and answering questions for Jumbotron features.
Defenseman Derek Morris
has been through many first days of training camp. He said he and his teammates are always glad when it’s over.
“Today is not a fun day,” Morris said. “Nobody enjoys today. For some reason, we all still worry about it. But it is good just to get back around the guys and get back into the hockey mind-set. Tomorrow is the day that’s fun.”
The players have been split into three groups for the first few days of training camp. The first group will take the ice inside Jobing.com Arena on Saturday at 9 a.m. RELATED CONTENT:
