GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Hockey Canada announced today that forward Lucas Lessio, drafted by the Coyotes in the second round (56th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, has been selected to represent Canada at the 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge, an event that replaces Canada’s National Junior Team Development Camp.

The 6-foot-1, 206 pound Lessio appeared in 66 games with Oshawa (Ontario Hockey League) this season, recording 34-25-59 and 71 penalty minutes (PIM). His 34 goals were tied for the team high. In six postseason games with the Generals, he registered 3-2-5 and six PIM’s.

The 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge, a collaboration between Hockey Canada, the Canadian Hockey League and Halifax Trade Centre Limited, will see Canada and Russia’s national junior programs face off in four games, two in Russia and two in Canada, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series. The 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place from December 26, 2012 – January 5, 2013 in Ufa, Russia.
