GLENDALE -- The Coyotes will open their 2013-14 preseason schedule tonight with two split-squad games vs. the Los Angeles Kings – one here in Glendale and one in LA.

Head Coach Dave Tippett and his staff will be behind the bench at the home game, the roster for which will feature captain Shane Doan, Mike Smith, Keith Yandle and new center Mike Ribeiro.

Recent first-round draft picks Connor Murphy (2011), Henrik Samuelsson (2012) and Max Domi (2013) also will play in the home game.

“There’s lots to look at and to evaluate, and great opportunity for some young players,” Head Coach Dave Tippett said after the morning skate. “There are also some veteran players that are anxious to get playing… It’s a good mix.”

Tippett said Smith would play two periods and would be relieved by prospect Mike Lee.

Domi wil start the game playing on a line with veterans Martin Hanzal and Radim Vrbata.

"Camp has been a lot of fun," Domi said. "Obviously there's a lot of talent here and everyone is here for a reason so you just kind of soak it all in and observe and watch the older guys and how they act and just try to learn as much as you possibly can. I've been trying to do that as much as I possibly can and it's just been a great experience so far."

Prospect Lucas Lessio, who has been nursing an injury the past few days, will play in the home game, too, on a line with veteran center Antoine Vermette and Samuelsson.

After three days of training camp, Doan said he and his teammates are eager to compete against another team.

“It’s so important to kind of get your timing back, to hit people, be hit, understand there are other people out there that are playing for jobs and they’re going to try to hit you,” Doan said. “That’s a whole part of our game, and that’s fun.”

In the road game at Staples Center, backup goalie Thomas Greiss will play two periods. He will be relieved by prospect Louis Domingue.

“The young players that are pushing for jobs and pushing for ice time, I expect them to be very competitive on the road,” Tippett said.

The team’s AHL coaching staff will be behind the bench at the Staples Center.
