Several Coyotes and other Valley-based NHL players dusted off their pads on Monday and hit the ice inside the Alltel Ice Den in Scottsdale for the first time in a while as part of their independent preparations for next month’s training camps.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan, Peter Mueller, Olli Jokinen, Derek Morris and Keith Yandle, and prospects Brett MacLean, David Spina, Jonas Ahnelov, and 2008 first-round draft pick Mikkel Boedker were among those who skated for nearly two hours. Similar voluntary workouts will take place at the Alltel Ice Den in the days and weeks leading up to NHL training camps. New York Islanders scout Rob Cowie is running the sessions.

Doan is using the summer ice time to get himself into skating shape.

“As far as skating shape, I’m a long ways away,” Doan said. “Nothing you do seems to get you ready. That first day is always a tough one.”

Boedker is using the workouts to test his abilities against proven NHL players.

“I want to show myself I am good enough to be a part of the organization… to see if I can play with all the best players in the NHL and be a part of the team,” Boedker said.

Mueller has kept busy this summer in the weight room, adding size and speed, but took the time to enjoy a skate with his teammates.

“It’s good to get back with the boys,” said Mueller, who chose not to wear a visor during the workout. “I know the season is coming around soon so it’s a happy time for me and the boys.“
