Coyotes Defeat Kings in Rookie Game 2

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Coyotes rookies capped a two-game series against the Los Angeles Kings rookies with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at the Toyota Sports Center.

Arizona won the first game, 5-3, on Tuesday night.

Dakota Mermis, Brendan Perlini, Laurent Dauphin and Jeremie Fraser scored for the Coyotes, who, like on Tuesday night, never trailed.

Mermis scored the game’s first goal and added a second one during a five-minute, 3-on-3 overtime session that was played for exhibition purposes.

"At the end of the day you want to play for the Coyotes and not just show well in rookie games (but) it's a good start for me," Mermis said. "I look forward to the main camp starting and we'll see where it takes us."

Niklas Treutle played the first two periods in goal for Arizona and stopped 15 of 16 shots he faced. Adin Hill stopped all 16 shots he faced in the third period and the OT.

"I think it's great to come down here to LA and get two wins," Hill said. "It's huge for our organization. Hopefully we keep roling with it and keep momentum heading into the exhibition (games)."

Perlini’s goal, his fourth in four Rookie Games against the Kings, was the goal most will remember as he scored it backhanded while falling to the ice through the goal crease. The goal came at 15:50 of the first period and it gave Arizona a 2-0 lead.

"The guys played good again," Perlini said. "We brought a lot of speed and skill to the table and we executed on some power plays. We're glad to get the win."

Leading 2-1, Dauphin banged a loose puck near the crease into the Kings net during a power play at 9:38 of the third period. Fraser’s goal was an empty-netter scored with 1:19 to play.

Defenseman Justin Hache, who has been with the Coyotes since the 2012 Draft, served as team captain. Dauphin and Henrik Samuelsson were the alternate captains.
