Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced that the Coyotes have claimed center Niko Kapanen off waivers from the Atlanta Thrashers.
Kapanen, 28, registered 4-9-13 and 20 penalty minutes (PIM) in 60 games played with Atlanta this season. In 2005-06, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound native of Hameenlinna, Finland recorded 14-21-35 and 36 PIM in 81 games for the Dallas Stars.
In 5 NHL seasons with Dallas and Atlanta, Kapanen has registered 24-65-89 and 118 PIM in 299 career games. Kapanen was selected by Dallas in the 6th round (173rd overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
Kapanen spent 6 seasons in Finnish Elite League with HPK Hameenlinna and TPS Turku from 1995-2001, recording 60-106-166 and 165 PIM in 258 regular-season games, and 10-19-29 in 36 playoff contests.
In addition, Kapanen has represented Team Finland in 5 World Championships (2005, 2004, 2002, 2001 and 2000), the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and helped lead Team Finland to a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin Italy (2-1-3 in 8 games).
