Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced that the Coyotes have acquired 23-year-old center Alexei Kaigorodov from the Ottawa Senators for center Mike Comrie.
Kaigorodov recorded 1 assist in 6 games with Ottawa this season. The native of Chelyabinsk, Russia made his NHL debut this season for the Senators at Montreal on Oct. 14. Kaigorodov has also registered 1-4-5 in 12 games with Magnitogorsk in Russia this season.
The 6-foot, 194-pound Kaigorodov registered 9-21-30 and 42 penalty minutes (PIM) in 50 games last season to rank 4th in scoring and T-3rd in assists with Magnitogorsk. He led Magnitogorsk in points and assists in 2004-05 when he recorded 15-34-49 and 40 PIM in 57 games. Kaigorodov represented Russia at the 2003 World Championships, playing 2 games in the tournament.
Kaigorodov was Ottawa's 2nd choice (2nd round, 47th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He was rated the 9th best European skater in Central Scouting's final ranking entering the draft.
Comrie registered 7-13-20 and 20 PIM in 24 games with the Coyotes this season. In 3 seasons with the Coyotes, he recorded 45-50-95 and 132 games. The Coyotes acquired Comrie from Philadelphia for Sean Burke, Branko Radivojevic, and Ben Eager on Feb. 9, 2004.
