Cooley Feature

Logan Cooley
and
Cutter Gauthier
, each a top prospect for the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft, are among the 60 players scheduled to take part in USA Hockey's evaluation camp for the 2022 and 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The camp will be held July 24-Aug. 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. It will include five goalies, 20 defensemen and 35 forwards.
The 2022 WJC will be held Aug. 9-20 in Edmonton. The tournament originally was scheduled for Dec. 26-Jan. 5 but was postponed Dec. 29 because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus. Players not attending the camp who took part in the 2022 WJC will be eligible to play when the tournament returns, regardless of whether they have turned 20 or not.
The 2023 WJC is scheduled for Dec. 26, 2022-Jan. 5, 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Moncton, New Brunswick.
Cooley (5-foot-10, 180 pounds), a center with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under-18 team, is No. 2 in
NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters
for the 2022 draft. He was second on the NTDP with 75 points (27 goals, 48 assists) in 51 games. He had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 23 shots on goal in six games to help the United States finish second at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
"He's very hard to contain, very hard to limit, and he has this brain that processes the game very quickly," NHL Central Scouting senior manager David Gregory said.
Gauthier (6-2, 200), a left wing with the NTDP, is No. 3 in Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters. He was second on the NTDP with 34 goals and was fifth with 65 points in 54 games. He also had nine points (three goals, six assists) and 30 shots on goal in six games for the U.S. at the U-18 Worlds.
"He's been very consistent all year as a point producer," Gregory said, "and his game has really evolved into where he can play in all situations, so he can kill a penalty for you because he's got good reach, good positional play without the puck."
Also slated to attend will be NTDP right wings
Jimmy Snuggerud
(No. 11) and
Rutger McGroarty
(No. 22), Northeastern University center
Jack Hughes
(No. 26), and NTDP defensemen
Ryan Chesley
(No. 18) and
Lane Hutson
(No. 25).
NTDP goalies
Dylan Silverstein
, No. 3 on Central Scouting's
final ranking of North American goalies
, and
Tyler Muszelik
(No. 4) each is expected at the camp.
The draft will be held at Bell Centre in Montreal on July 7-8.
Others scheduled to attend the camp include five players picked in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft: defenseman
Luke Hughes
(No. 4, New Jersey Devils), and forwards
Tyler Boucher
(No. 10, Ottawa Senators),
Matt Coronato
(No. 13, Calgary Flames),
Chaz Lucius
(No. 18, Winnipeg Jets) and
Mackie Samoskevich
(No. 24, Florida Panthers).
One player eligible for the 2023 NHL Draft is also expected to be on hand: NTDP U-18 forward Charlie Stramel.
Ten teams will take part in the 2022 WJC: The United States, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Austria will play in Group A; Canada, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia and Latvia will play in Group B.
Latvia was added to replace Russia, which has been banned from international play because of its invasion of Ukraine.
