Team Canada advanced to the semi-finals of the 2007 IIHF World Championships with a 5-1 victory over Switzerland on Thursday in Moscow, Russia. Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan recorded two assists while Calgary Flames forward Matthew Lombardi scored twice in the victory. Canada will now play Sweden in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Team USA did not fair as well as they were able to erase a Finland lead on four different occasions to force overtime, only to eventually fall in a shootout on a goal by Finland’s Jere Lehtinen (Dallas); for a 5-4 win. Coyotes’ defenseman Keith Ballard had an assist in game for Team USA as they head home without a chance to play for a medal.
Finland will face Russia on Saturday in the other semi-final match-up. For more information on the 2007 IIHF World Championships log on to www.iihf.com, www.wcsn.com or www.phoenixcoyotes.com.
