Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced that the Coyotes have recalled defenseman Ryan Caldwell on emergency conditions from the San Antonio Rampage, the Coyotes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.
The Coyotes recalled Caldwell after defenseman Zbynek Michalek suffered a broken hand at practice on Wednesday. Michalek’s injury left the Coyotes with only five healthy defensemen on their roster. Michalek will be out of the lineup tonight when the Coyotes open the 2007-08 NHL regular season against the St. Louis Blues at Jobing.com Arena. The Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic native is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Caldwell, 26, registered 7-23-30 and 94 penalty minutes (PIM) in 61 games with Syracuse of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season. In three AHL seasons with Bridgeport and Syracuse, the 6-foot-3, 202-pound Caldwell has collected 12-54-66 and 197 PIM in 195 games.
Caldwell played two NHL games with the New York Islanders in 2005-06 and recorded 2 PIM. Caldwell was selected by the Islanders in the 7th round (202nd overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
