The National Hockey League announced today that Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has been named the NHL’s Third Star for the week ending Dec. 13. Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick was named the first star while Vancouver Canucks forward Daniel Sedin was named the second star.
Bryzgalov posted a 2-0-1 record in three games for the week, posting a 0.97 goals against average (GAA), a .968 save percentage (SV%) and one shutout while stopping 91 of the 94 shots he faced. Bryzgalov began the week by stopping all 28 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Wild to record his fourth shutout of the season. On Thursday, he made 26 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss at Los Angeles. Bryzgalov then made a season-high 37 saves in a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
For the season, Bryzgalov is 18-8-2 in 28 games and ranks T-1st among all NHL goaltenders in shutouts (4), 2nd in GAA (1.95), T-3rd in wins (18) and T-5th in SV% (.928). He has started each of the past 12 games for the Coyotes, guiding the team to a record of 8-2-2 in that stretch. The Coyotes (19-11-2) are currently in third place in the Pacific Division and sixth in the Western Conference.
The Coyotes return to action at 5:30 p.m. tonight as they play at the Detroit Red Wings to begin a four-game road trip. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports Arizona (HD) and XTRA Sports 910.
