The National Hockey League announced today that Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has been named the NHL’s Second Star for the month of December. Vancouver Canucks forward Henrik Sedin was named the first star while Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane was named the third star.
Bryzgalov posted an 8-2-3 record with a 1.82 goals against average (GAA), a .939 save percentage (SV%) and two shutouts in December, helping the Coyotes finish the month in second place in the Pacific Division and fourth in the Western Conference. Bryzgalov allowed two or fewer goals in 10 of 13 starts, highlighted by a season-high 37-save performance in a 2-1 win over the Western Conference-leading San Jose Sharks on Dec. 12, along with shutout victories over the Minnesota Wild (28 saves, Dec. 7) and Anaheim Ducks (21 saves, Dec. 23). Named to the Russian Olympic Team on Dec. 25, Bryzgalov ranks among NHL goaltending leaders in shutouts (5, T-1st), GAA (2.03, 3rd), SV% (.927, 4th) and victories (22, T-4th). Bryzgalov also helped lead the Coyotes to a franchise-record 10-game home winning streak (Nov. 21 – Dec. 29), recording nine of the 10 victories.
The Coyotes return to action at 7 p.m. tomorrow when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Oilers. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Arizona and broadcast on XTRA Sports 910. On Thursday, they visit the Vancouver Canucks at 8 p.m. (FOX Sports Arizona, XTRA Sports 910) before returning home to host the New York Islanders at Jobing.com Arena on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. That game will also be broadcast on FOX Sports Arizona and XTRA Sports 910.
