Welcome to my first blog for phoenixcoyotes.com. I’ll be writing one every now and then to share some thoughts and stories with you as we plow through the long season.
Living and playing here in Arizona has been great so far. I lived in Florida for a short time when I was growing up and I played in Tampa Bay briefly, but I really didn’t know what to expect about living in the Southwest, especially in the desert. It’s really agreed with me and my wife and my family. The kids love it here. There’s just such a great atmosphere here day after day after day.
Our team has started the season pretty well. It’s not surprising, even though we started the season with so many question marks about the franchise, the coaching, and all the new players and all the young players. We’ve had a real strong start. Having said that, we have a long way to go so we can’t get too overconfident or excited.
I’ve had a chance to meet some of our fans away from the rink and they’ve been very supportive. Someone asked me the other day if I was disappointed by the attendance at our home games. Honestly, I thought it was going to be worse. The crowds have been pretty good given the ownership situation, and I think slowly but surely more fans are going to start coming back because of the product we are putting on the ice and the end of the bankruptcy case. We shall see…
You probably noticed I still use a wooden stick. I’ve definitely thought about changing, but it’s kind of like golf clubs when they went to graphite shafts; you only have to swing half as hard. I just can’t get used to that. The kick point on the composite stick is completely different. I’m sure if I stuck with it I could make the transition, but I am happy with the way my sticks have been performing so why bother changing. Plus I figure I’m saving the team on the budget, right?
A lot of guys in our room are really into baseball right now and are following the World Series. I like baseball too, but this year is weird. I’m not into it as much as I normally am. I’m not sure if it’s because of our schedule or what. Normally I am right into it. But this year, between hockey, family and being a football fan, it’s a lot right now.
I’ve been enjoying living in an NFL city again and even went to one of the Cardinals games – the home opener against the 49ers. The Cardinals lost that game, but they are starting to show they are a good team. I actually met Kurt Warner at a charity event for kids in Las Vegas. I find I root for players more than teams and he’s an easy guy to root for because he’s such a nice person. He just has that demeanor where you really hope he does well.
Well, that’s plenty for now. Thanks for reading this and thanks for your support this season.
