The 2007 IIHF Men’sWorld Campionships got underway today with teams from Group B and D competing. In Group B, Team USA defeated Team Austria by a score of 6-2 in their opening game of the tournament in Moscow, Russia. Coyotes’ Defenseman Keith Ballard recorded an assist on a Christopher Clark goal in the second period. Ballard finished the day with one assist, two penalty minutes (PIMs) and was a plus one. Team USA’s next contest is on Sunday against Belarus.
Also in Group B, Belarus was beaten today by the Czech Republic 8-2. Coyotes’ Defenseman Zbynek Michalek had two PIMs and was plus three in the victory. The Czech Republic’s next game is against Team Ukrane on Sunday.
In Group D, Team Finland won by a score of 5-0 over Team Ukrane. Coyotes’ forward Niko Kapanen is representing Finland and had two shots on goal in the win.
Earlier today, Coyotes forward Shane Doan
was named captain of Team Canada. Teams from Groups A and C get underway tomorrow. In Group C, Canada plays its first game against Germany and Slovakia will take on Norway. In Group A, Latvia’s first tilt is against Switzerland, while Sweden does battle with Italy.
