Washington Capitals defensemen Jamie Heward and Bryan Muir visited first and second graders at Piney Orchard Elementary School in Odenton, Md., Friday, Dec. 2. The Capitals players read Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet to the students. After reading the book, Heward and Muir showed the students various pieces of hockey equipment. As the players were explaining what each piece of equipment is used for and its importance, they selected volunteers to come to the front of the group and try on the equipment. Next Heward and Muir held a Q&A session, answering the students questions. Finally, before leaving, the Capitals signed autographs and gave each student a Caps backpack.
“The kids today were great,” said Muir. “They were excited to see us and to learn more about hockey. I had a lot of fun and I look forward to visiting other area schools.”
