The Washington Capitals hold six picks in the 2018 NHL Draft, which begins on Friday, June 22 at American Airlines Center in Dallas and will be televised on NBCSN at 7:30 p.m. Rounds 2-7 will take place on Saturday and will be televised on NHL Network at 11 a.m. Last year, the team made four selections, including defenseman Tobias Geisser with the 120th overall selection. Homegrown - Sixteen players who played for the Capitals in 2017-18 were originally drafted by Washington (Nicklas Backstrom, Madison Bowey, Travis Boyd, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, Christian Djoos, Shane Gersich, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Chandler Stephenson, Jakub Vrana, Nathan Walker and Tom Wilson). Capitals draftees accounted for 66.8% of the team's goals, 69.4% of the team's assists and 68.4% of the team's points from last season.
Top of Their Class - Alex Ovechkin ranks first among players drafted in 2004 in goals (607), points (1,122) and games played (1,003). Nicklas Backstrom ranks first among players drafted in 2006 in assists (590) and points (799). Braden Holtby ranks first among goaltenders drafted in 2008 in games played (361) and wins (225). Holtby was the 10th goaltender selected in the 2008 NHL Draft and has more wins than the nine goaltenders drafted before him combined (220).
Quantity and Quality - Since 2006, 28 of Washington's draft picks have appeared in at least one game for the Capitals and have combined to play in 5,119 games for Washington.
Making an Impact - The Capitals 2004 NHL Draft class has combined to play in 2,494 NHL games, ranking first in the NHL. In addition, Washington's 2006 Draft class ranks third in games played (1,963) and its 2009 Draft class ranks sixth in games played (1,364).
Homegrown Goaltending - During the last eight seasons (2010-18), goaltenders drafted by Washington have accounted for 327 of the team's 360 wins (90.8%). Braden Holtby (2008) and Philipp Grubauer (2010), who were both drafted by the Capitals in the fourth round, have combined for the most wins in the NHL over the last four seasons (2014-18: 202).
Early Returns- Tobias Geisser, Washington's fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, registered six points (2g, 4a) in 38 games with EV Zug in in the National League (Swiss) in 2017-18. The 6'4", 205-pound defensemen also represented Switzerland in the 2018 World Junior Championship, skating in five games. Geisser was named a top-three player on Switzerland during the tournament. Sebastian Walfridsson, the Capitals' fifth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, registered three points (0g, 3a) in 31 games with Modo (Sweden) and four points (2g, 2a) in 24 games with Modo Jr. (Sweden-Jr.) in 2017-18, and ranked fourth on Modo Jr. in plus/minus (+12) and penalty minutes (36). The 6'0', 194-pound defenseman represented Sweden in seven games between Sweden's U19 and U20 teams during the 2017-18 season. Washington's 2017 sixth-round pick Benton Maass recorded 17 points (4g, 13a) in 36 games with the University of New Hampshire last season. In his 2017-18 freshman season, Maass' 17 points ranked third among freshman at New Hampshire, and Maass ranked third on the team in blocked shots (44). Seventh round pick Kristian Roykas Marthinsen registered 31 points (23g, 8a) in 23 games with Almtuna's junior team (Sweden) during the 2017-18 season, ranking first on the team in goals and second in points. The 6'0", 192-pound left wing also represented Norway in the 2018 World Junior Championship Division 1B, appearing in five games.
European Union - The Capitals have drafted a player from Europe in 10 consecutive drafts and have drafted 23 European players during that span. Washington has drafted a European player in the first round nine times in the last 12 drafts.
