During the past two regular seasons, the Washington Capitals have recorded 102 wins, 228 points and finished as the top seed in the Eastern Conference in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history. No other team in the National Hockey League has compiled more points than the Capitals over the last two campaigns. Washington jumped to a 12-4-4 record in their first 20 games in 2009-10 and were 14-5-1 in the first 20 contests last season. Getting off to a fast start is extremely important in the increasingly competitive Southeast Division. The Caps Convention has helped Caps fans unite and prepare for the season like no other event has before and in turn has propelled the Caps to a tremendously successful start to a season.
This outstanding showing of support and excitement by Caps fans certainly carried over to the Verizon Center atmosphere, where the Caps had their best start on home ice in franchise history, going 10-1-0 in their first 11 home games last season. For a third consecutive year, Caps fans will get the opportunity to celebrate the start of a new season by attending the 2011 Capitals Convention, presented by GEICO, on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011.
The third annual Capitals Convention will return to the Washington Convention Center for the second straight year. The event has been a tremendous success in its first two years, attracting sold-out crowds of more than 6,500 to the day-long interactive and informational celebration of the Capitals, which features the entire roster of current players and a number of prominent alumni.
The day will include player autographs and photos with fans. There will be a wide array of activities on hand such as hockey interactives, panel sessions, hockey displays and much more. Former Capital defenseman Calle Johansson will be in attendance for his first Caps Convention appearance.
Panel discussions will feature Capitals front office personnel and will focus on the behind-the-scenes, day-to-day responsibilities of operating a professional hockey club. Additionally, current and former Capitals players will participate in discussions that provide a glimpse of a professional athlete’s life and what they experience during the season.
The Capitals need help from the fans to decide which discussion panels will be featured at the convention. You can vote online for your top five choices and the winning topics will be added to the convention agenda.
