Nicklas Backstrom led the League in assists (60) and power-play assists (30) this season, marking the first time in Backstrom’s career he has paced the League in assists and the second consecutive season he has led the NHL in power-play assists. In addition, Backstrom finished the season ranked tied for third in power-play points (33), tied for fourth in primary assists (31) and sixth in points (78). The Gavle, Sweden, native has registered four of the nine 60-assist seasons in Capitals franchise history and since he entered the NHL in 2007-08, Backstrom ranks third in the League in assists (427), trailing Henrik Sedin (474) and Joe Thornton (452). With his assist in the first period on March 15 against Boston, Backstrom passed Michal Pivonka and Alex Ovechkin (418) for first place on the Capitals franchise assist list. Backstrom tied Pivonka for first place on March 7 against Buffalo, reaching 418 assists in 263 games fewer than Pivonka (825).
