Poti and Bradley Bring Caps Hockey School to Green Acres School

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals Hockey School presented by Chevy Chase Bank made a stop in Rockville, Md., at Green Acres School. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Capitals forward Matt Bradley, defenseman Tom Poti and assistant coach Dean Evason visited the school and led a hockey demonstration for 130 fifth-through-eighth-grade students.

Evason began the clinic with a question-and-answer session, allowing the students to ask questions about the team. Students also directed their curiosity toward Bradley and Poti, asking them what is it like to play in the National Hockey League as well as with Alex Ovechkin, what teams beside the Capitals have they played for and what are their favorite colors.

The Hockey School clinic continued with demonstrations in order to ensure that the students learned essential hockey skills, including proper stick handling, passing and shooting techniques. Bradley, Poti and Evason provided individual attention to several students as they tested out what they had learned.

Bradley and Poti participated in a shooting competition, where they each had the opportunity to shoot on Slapshot and Green Acres School Physical Education teacher, Mr. Matt Marchildon, while being cheered on by the audience. The Hockey School session concluded with students participating in a scrimmage.

To designate them as graduates of Hockey School, all students who participated in the clinic received a Capitals hockey 101 booklet, two autographed player cards, a Capitals squishy puck, a Capitals pocket schedule and a Chevy Chase Bank bag.

With its success last season, the Washington Capitals Hockey School presented by Chevy Chase Bank has returned this year with the focus on expanding into Washington, D.C., metropolitan area middle schools. Hockey School is designed to be both instructional and interactive, with the goal of exposing students to hockey and teaching proper technique.
