Postgame Quotebook 1-13

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
Coach Glen Hanlon

On Alex Ovechkin:
“Just when I thought I had seen it all, he does something else. He did a lot of things tonight that were pretty impressive. I think you get a pretty good idea of what a force he is.

“There are things that he will get better at. His work ethic and desire are incredible but there are some things that he will continue to improve on. We’re blessed on this team to have some great young players and he is one of them.”

On the game:
“A great night for [Brent Johnson] in goal. We’re all really extremely happy. That’s a very well coached team over there. They have some young players who are certainly as quick as any team we’ve seen. It took us playing our absolute best and it took us getting some great saves and certainly that was the difference.”

Left wing Alex Ovechkin
On the game:
“I feel excellent. We played well today and we win this game after we lost six or seven games. We needed this win.”

On playing physical hockey:
“This is my style. I like to play physical. If I have a chance to hit, I hit it. It doesn’t matter what players. I think if you play hockey you must respect the game. When the game finishes, I respect everybody. I just love hockey and I play hard.”

On his hat trick:
“Thanks to my partners today for giving me great chances to score.
I’m happy. I score a few goals and we win this game. First hat trick, it’s like first goal in NHL.”

Goaltender Brent Johnson
On the game:
“The guys played really well, especially down low. They kept the puck from the middle of the ice where they are strong. There were great performances by a bunch of guys. The guys were really excited for tonight and we really hoped to get a win before this break here.”

On the play of his teammates:
“Every line was hitting. And needless to say Ovy had an unbelievable game. He was hitting, scoring, shooting the puck and getting pucks to the net. It seemed like every line was doing that. We played hard defensively.

“We had a couple letdowns including one by me on the second goal. I just found myself a little too far back in the crease. I could have challenged a little bit more. The guy really didn’t have much to shoot at; he picked the corner short side and that’s a goal I’d like to have back, especially being up 2-1. But I thought the guys played excellent and played especially well in the third. That was just a great win and I can’t stop smiling right now.”

Defenseman Jamie Heward
On the game:
“You’ve got to give Anaheim a lot of credit for coming out and playing a fast-paced hockey game. They’re a good, quick, good-skating hockey team. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a great first period. But Johnny played sick, sick. If you can quote that, that’s as good as it gets. He was unbelievable in the first period. He gave us a chance to win; he gave us a chance to come back and play well in the second and third. It was a good effort from top to bottom.”

Right wing Matt Bradley
On the game:
“That was Washington Capitals hockey tonight, coming back hard and taking the body. We knew they were a fast team and a good team but we showed them that when we play our way, we can be successful.”

On the play of Brent Johnson in goal:
“Johnny is a big part of this team. We all know he is a great goalie even though he doesn’t get to play very much. But when he does, he is ready to play and tonight he was unbelievable. He kept us in the game.”
