by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
ARLINGTON, Va.- Today marks the first day of registration for the third annual Washington Capitals Youth Hockey Shootout. The competition, which begins in August and continues throughout the Caps regular season, allows participants to showcase their skills while contending to become the top shooter or goalie in their age bracket. There is no fee to participate.

Preliminary rounds kick off the first weekend in August (6th and 7th) and will continue throughout the month in various Maryland and Virginia ice rinks. The tournament is open to all youth hockey players at the mite, squirt, peewee, bantam, and midget age groups (determined by USA Hockey age classifications).

Last season more than 350 local youth hockey players participated in the shootout competition. The finalists were awarded with a personalized Capitals jersey that they wore during the finals that took place in front of thousands of fans at Verizon Center during an intermission of a Washington Capitals home game. This season skaters who make it to the finals will get to enjoy this same honor.
