November Caps@School

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals would like to congratulate fourth-grade teacher Holly Nielson and her class at Rock View Elementary School in Kensington, Md., for being selected as the November winners of the Caps@School contest. As the monthly contest winners, Nielson won a special Washington Capitals visit and Chipotle burrito party for her entire class after she used the “Caps from Around the World” SMART Board lesson plan to teach geography to her students. Nielson discussed with her students the reasons why many hockey players hail from around the globe before having the students work in pairs to look at a world map and answer a set of questions she had prepared.

At the school the students enjoyed burritos, chips and salsa courtesy of Chipotle. They were joined by Caps mascot Slapshot who visited with the students and worked on a question-and-answer session with them on the whiteboard. Each student also received a Washington Capitals goody bag and a Slapshot card.

Through the Caps@School program, the Capitals are making available to local educators a free, online curriculum-enhancing teaching tool for first- through sixth-grade classes. The Caps@School website features hockey-themed lesson plans, stories, educational games and more.

Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., teachers can enroll their classes for free and download lesson plans at the Caps@School website at
