Washington, D.C. – Washington Capitals players Jack Hillen, Matt Niskanen and Joel Ward, Washington Mystics guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt and Washington Wizards alumnus Bob Dandridge joined Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, more than 175 volunteers from Imagine Lincoln Public Charter School, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Temple Hills community to build a new playground at Imagine Lincoln on Oct. 30.
The new playground’s design is based on children’s drawings created at a special design event in September and featured slides, monkey bars and a swing set. Capitals goaltender Justin Peters participated in the design session, assisting children with brainstorming ideas. The school’s previous playground was destroyed by arson in July. The new one will provide more than 450 Temple Hills children with a safe place to play.

“It was great to see the volunteers participate together on a project that will provide kids with a safe place to play,” said Niskanen. “We hope the children enjoy the new playground and have fun being active with all of its features.”
The playground is the second built by Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation and KaBOOM! and the fourth built by the Capitals and KaBOOM!. MSE Foundation supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community and served as the funding partner for the playground, which cost $89,910.
“I am glad to have been part of the playground build at Imagine Lincoln,” said Ruffin-Pratt. “To see so many volunteers come out and join us to create a wonderful environment for the kids was even more gratifying.”
Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation supports the charitable efforts of the professional teams under its umbrella: the Washington Capitals, Mystics and Wizards. MSE is committed to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and focuses on the following five pillars to maximize its impact and engagement with the community: youth basketball and hockey, education and scholarship, pediatric health and fitness, military and veterans' affairs and hunger and homelessness.
KaBOOM! is the national nonprofit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America. Since 1996, KaBOOM! has collaborated with partners to build, open or improve nearly 16,000 playgrounds, engaged more than one million volunteers and served 7.4 million children.
KaBOOM! creates great places to play, inspires communities to promote and support play, and works to drive the national discussion about the importance of play in fostering healthy lives and communities.
