ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green and left wing Alex Ovechkin have been selected to participate in the 2011 NHL All-Star Weekend festivities to be held Jan. 28-30 in Raleigh, N.C., the league announced today. Green and Ovechkin are among 42 All-Stars who will be part of the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft on Friday, Jan. 28, to determine teams for the NHL SuperSkills event the next day and the All-Star Game on Sunday.
Green, 25, will be making his first appearance at an NHL All-Star Game despite being named a postseason first-team NHL All-Star each of the last two seasons. The two-time runner-up for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman currently ranks fourth in the league in average ice time (26:10) and leads all Capitals defensemen in goals (8) and points (20).
Ovechkin, 25, will be making his fourth NHL All-Star appearance, one shy of the Capitals club record (Peter Bondra). He currently leads the Capitals in assists (29), points (44), shots (194) and hits (129). He leads the league in shots and is one off the league lead with five game-winning goals.
Both Green and Ovechkin were selected by the Capitals in the first round of the 2004 Entry Draft, which was also held in Raleigh’s RBC Center. Washington is one of 11 teams with multiple selections to the NHL All-Star Game.
