Quebec League center Mathieu Perreault is built like Buffalo’s Daniel Briere, and the Sabres’ pivot is Perreault’s favorite NHL player, too. Briere himself was a first-round choice (24th overall) in 1996. Briere was listed as being an inch taller and nine pounds heavier than Perreault in his draft year.

The second player chosen overall in the 2005 QMJHL Midget draft, Perreault had a fine rookie season for Acadie-Bathurst in 2005-06. He finished fifth among all Quebec League rookies in scoring, with 52 points in 62 games.

As his junior career progresses, Perreault should earn more power play time and could eventually move up to center the team’s top line. Briere was 24 before he developed into a top-flight NHL regular, and patience will be needed with Perreault, too.
