The Washington Capitals participated in Hockey Fights Cancer Maryland’s Skatefest ’08 at Ice World in Abingdon, Md., on Sunday, May 4. The event, in its first year, raised thousands of dollars to fund the fight against cancer on both a national and local level. Skatefest ‘08 included a skate-a-thon, skills competition, broom ball, carnival games, inflatables, vendors, food and music.
Capitals alumni Yvon Labre, Alan Hangsleben, Rod Langway, Gary Rissling, Bryan Watson, Gordon Lane, Paul Mulvey, Errol Rausse, Blair Stewart and Granny Grant were on hand to sign autographs. Capitals mascot Slapshot made an appearance as well, posing for pictures and Capitals broadcaster Steve Kolbe took to the microphone to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the cause.
Other guests included The Hanson Brothers, Kimmie Meissner and Duff “Ace of Cakes” Goldman while The Zambonis and Katelyn Tarver performed on stage.
The event was capped off by a sold-out alumni game between the Capitals and the Flyers. The contest ended in a 6-6 tie.
An online auction is being held in conjunction with Skatefest ’08 and features autographed jerseys, pucks, hats and photographs. The auction closes the evening of May 5. To visit the auction or for more information about Skatefest ’08, please visit http://www.hockeyfightscancermaryland.com/.
