With the Washington Capitals set to drop the puck on the 2009-10 season Thursday night, it’s possible that a dispute between DirecTV and VERSUS will prevent DirecTV subscribers from watching two of the first three Capitals games on their home TVs.
The Capitals organization has been in contact with the NHL office, which has met with officials from DirecTV and VERSUS to help resolve the matter.
The best solution for fans with DirecTV, at this point, is to contact DirecTV and let them know that you do not want any NHL games taken away from you. You can reach DirecTV at 1-800-DIRECTV or via email at email@example.com.
Of immediate concern are the Oct. 1 game at Boston and the Oct. 6 game at Philadelphia, both of which will be carried exclusively by VERSUS. Should the dispute continue it would affect seven Capitals games during the course of the season.
Meanwhile, there are alternatives for fans with DirecTV who want to watch Thursday and Tuesday’s games.
Thursday the Capitals will be hosting a Puck Drop Party at Hard Times Café and Cue in Springfield, Virginia, with the VERSUS broadcast on TVs throughout the establishment. Hard Times is located at 6362 Springfield Plaza and the party starts at 7 p.m.
Verizon FIOS, cable and DISH Network subscribers who receive VERSUS will not be affected by this dispute and will still be able to see the games. In addition to contacting DirecTV, Caps fans who wish to see the games are encouraged to contact a friend or a local restaurant to see if they will be watching the games.
Fans in Canada can also find the game online through NHL GameCenter LIVE, a subscription service that carries up to 40 games per week. To sign up visit http://gamecenter.nhl.com. Because the game is carried nationally in the U.S. it will not be available to NHL GameCenter LIVE subscribers in the U.S.
Caps fans can listen to Saturday’s game on 106.7 the Fan or on WashingtonCaps.com. Tuesday’s game can be heard on WFED 1500 AM or WashingtonCaps.com.
