The Washington Capitals would like to congratulate Bonnie Marlar and her sixth-grade language arts students at Lake Ridge Middle School in Woodbridge, Va., for being selected as the December winners of the Caps@School contest. As the monthly contest winner, Marlar won a special Washington Capitals visit and Chipotle burrito party for her class, as well as tickets to the Jan. 17 Caps game at Verizon Center.
Marlar used the Caps@School program to develop a compare and contrast activity for her special education language arts class. The students were assigned Caps players to learn about using the “Player Facts” section of the Caps@School website, then wrote letters to the Caps comparing and contrasting themselves to their assigned players.
At the school Slapshot visited with the students while they enjoyed burritos, chips and salsa courtesy of Chipotle. During the visit the students did a SMART Board activity with Slapshot, testing his basic knowledge of math, social studies and science. Each student also got to take home a puck autographed by a Washington Capitals player.
Through the Caps@School program, the Capitals are making available to local educators a free, online curriculum-enhancing teaching tool for first- through sixth-grade classes. The Caps@School website features lesson plans with Caps players, player fun facts, stories and more.
Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., teachers can enroll their classes for free and start to download lesson plans at the Caps@School website at CapsAtSchool.com
