recap bruins 6

Washington finished up a two-game weekend road trip against a depleted and weary Bruins team on Sunday night in Boston, and the Caps made sure their hosts had nothing to feel good about. They roared out of the gates with a fury and put a crooked number on the board in all three periods, coasting to an 8-1 win.

T.J. Oshie, Lars Eller and Conor Sheary each scored two goals and the Washington power play tallied three times against Boston's League-leading penalty killing unit.
"I thought we [played] a good game," says Caps coach Peter Laviolette. "We played a team that was against it with the schedule and some injuries, but I thought our guys were in the right frame [of mind]. You could tell this morning that they were ready to play, and they came in and went to work."
The first frame was full of fireworks, starting with some fisticuffs just four seconds after the opening puck drop when Caps defenseman Brenden Dillon gave Boston's Chris Wagner a proper tune-up.

Oshie leads way as Capitals cruise past Bruins, 8-1

Boston went on the game's first power play just 23 seconds later but wasn't able to convert. On its own first power play of the game, the Caps grabbed a 1-0 lead at 7:33 when Oshie slipped a shot through Dan Vladar from the diamond, his team-leading ninth power-play goal of the season.
Sixteen seconds later, the Caps doubled their advantage on a slick goal from Eller. Garnet Hathaway chipped the puck from the Washington zone into Boston territory and went for a change. Carl Hagelin won the race to the puck, curling off at the right half-wall and feeding Eller, who skirted Boston forward Anton Blidh - fighting off a hook as he did - and roofed a shot behind Vladar for a 2-0 Washington lead.
With their third goal in a span of just 129 seconds, the Caps opened up a 3-0 lead on a 3-on-2 rush. Dmitry Orlov led the charge from the middle of the ice, sending Daniel Sprong into Boston ice with speed down the right side. Sprong went back to Orlov, who sent a sublime backhand feed to Sheary on the left wing. From the inside of the left circle, Sheary finished the tic-tac-toe play at 9:42 to make it 3-0 for Washington.
In the second period, the Caps hung three more lamplighters on the Bruins, including two more power-play goals.
With time winding down on a Washington power play early in the middle period, the Caps were whistled for icing. They had three wingers on the ice at the time, so Sheary took and won the ensuing defensive zone draw and scored 13 seconds later, finishing off a nice feed from Tom Wilson to make it 4-0 at 4:41.
Late in the period, Nic Dowd lost a draw in his own end and extended the Washington lead to 5-0 just nine seconds later. Although Boston "won" the draw, Hagelin was first to the puck and he scooted through neutral ice with it, leaving it for Dowd just above the Boston line. Dowd carried in and fired from the outside of the left circle, beating Vladar high to the far (glove) side at 16:03.
As another Caps power play ticked into its final seconds late in the middle frame, Alex Ovechkin put a perfect feed on Wilson's tape for a back-door lay-up at 18:24, making it a 6-0 game.
Boston scored its lone goal of the game on a power play three minutes into the third period. Craig Smith scored on a rebound to make it 6-1.
Seconds after a Charlie Coyle slashing minor expired in the middle of the third period, Oshie netted his second goal of the game, batting a Nicklas Backstrom pass out of midair and into the net at 10:13 of the third.
Eller closed out the scoring at 13:14 of the third, scoring on a double deflection. The shot originated from Dillon at center point, and Oshie also got a piece of it en route to the net.

Postgame | Sheary and Wilson

"Boston's been a good team in this league for a long time," says Wilson. "They bring it every night, so coming into this building is always tough. We wanted to make sure that we had a good 60 minutes, and it sounds cliché, but it was pretty good tonight and got the job done."
Caps goalie Vitek Vanecek finished the night with 34 saves to improve to 17-7-3 on the season.
