Caps Care Classic Surpasses $1 Million Mark

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
The 2008 Caps Care Classic raised more than $180,000 through sponsorship, donations and an online auction, bringing the grand total of funds raised during the five years of the event to more than $1 million. The Caps Care Classic was held Oct. 6 at the Springfield Golf & Country Club in Springfield, Va., and benefits the Children’s National Medical Center and Washington Capitals Charities.

Capitals ownership, coaches and every player on the roster took part in this year’s event, with center Michael Nylander leading the winning group, shooting a 59 in the scramble format with teammates Rick Kay and Pete Kirsch. A number of Capitals alumni, politicians and local celebrities played in the tournament, while Caps legend Peter Bondra posed for photos and signed autographs for each group.
Generous donations from sponsors and Caps Care Classic participants combined with an online auction to reach a grand total of $181,970.26 raised by this year’s event. That total is an increase of more than $10,000 from last year’s event.
