Updates from the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia

Tuesday, May 28

Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov each won a bronze medal following a 3-2 shootout victory over Team Czech Republic. It marks the ninth medal Ovechkin has won at the World Championship (three golds, two silvers, four bronzes). Ovechkin has registered 64 points (35g, 29a) in 83 career games at the World Championship.

Kuznetsov (2g, 4a) and Orlov (2g, 4a) each led all Capitals participating in the tournament in points, while Jakub Vrana (Czech Republic) led all Capitals with four goals.

Wednesday, May 22

Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov each recorded a goal, with Evgeny Kuznetsov earning an assist, in Team Russia's 7-4 victory over Team Sweden. Orlov now has six points (2g, 4a) in six games in the tournament. Prior to this tournament, Orlov represented Russia in three World Championships (2014, 2016, 2017), recording five points (1g, 4a) in 14 games. Team Czech Republic, which features both Jakub Vrana and Dmitrij Jaskin, edged out Team Switzerland in a 5-4 victory. Both Capitals were held scoreless.

Team Russia will now face Team USA in the quarterfinal tomorrow, while Team Czech Republic will square off against Team Germany.

Tuesday, May 21

The Capitals participating in the IIHF World Championship continue today, with Team Russia (Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov) playing Team Sweden, while Team Czech Republic (Jakub Vrana, Dmitrij Jaskin) face Team Switzerland. Vrana, who has four goals in the tournament, is tied for 12th in goals, and his five points are tied with Kuznetsov (2g, 3a) and Lars Eller (2g, 3a) for the most by a Capital in the tournament

Monday, May 20

Team Russia earned a 3-0 victory over Team Switzerland yesterday at the IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. Dmitry Orlov recorded an assist in the effort as Russia, which also features Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, improved to 6-0 in the tournament, good for first place in Group B. Team Czech Republic defeated Team Austria 8-0. Jakub Vrana scored a goal in the game while Dmitrij Jaskin recorded an assist.

Team Russia will play Team Sweden tomorrow, while Team Czech Republic will play Team Switzerland.

Thursday, May 16

Team Russia earned a 10-0 victory over Team Italy yesterday at the IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. Evgeny Kuznetsov tied Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov for the most points in the game (Kuznetsov: 2g, 2a), while Alex Ovechkin recorded his first goal of the tournament and added an assist. Ovechkin has 64 points (34g, 28a) in 77 career games at the World Championship. Team Russia, who is 4-0 in the tournament, will face Team Latvia on Saturday.

Today, Team Czech Republic, which features both Jakub Vrana and Dmitrij Jaskin, square off against Team Latvia.

 

Wednesday, May 15

Team Denmark earned a 9-0 victory over Team Great Britain yesterday at the IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. Lars Eller led Denmark with four points (1g, 3a) in the effort and currently ranks first on Denmark and among all Capitals participating in the tournament with five points (2g, 3a) in three games. 

Today, Team Russia, headed by Capitals' captain Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov, take on Team Italy as they look to improve to 4-0 in the tournament. Team Czech Republic, which features both Jakub Vrana and Dmitrij Jaskin, continue tomorrow with a matchup against Team Latvia.

Tuesday, May 14

Team Russia earned a 3-0 victory over Team Czech Republic yesterday at the IIHF World Championship played in Slovakia. The game featured five different Capitals (Team Russia: Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov; Team Czech Republic: Jakub Vrana, Dmitrij Jaskin). Each player was held scoreless in the game, with Orlov leading the quintet with 20:01 minutes of ice time. Vrana has three points (2g, 1a) in three games. Russia will face Italy on Wednesday, while the Czech Republic will play Latvia on Thursday.

Today, Lars Eller and Team Denmark took on Team Great Britain, winning 9-0. Eller recorded four points (1g, 3a) in the game and leads Denmark and all Capitals players in points (2g, 3a) in the tournament.
